Bangkok to Ayutthaya: Private Day Tour

Temple and group near Ayutthaya on a private day tour from Bangkok

Ayutthaya was once one of the biggest cities on earth, the capital of a kingdom, until it was burned in 1767. What's left is gloriously photogenic: brick temple ruins, rows of headless Buddhas, and one famous stone Buddha head cradled in tree roots.

It's about 75 minutes north of Bangkok, which makes it the perfect private day tour, if you skip the coach crowd.

Private van vs the tour bus

The coach tour gives you 25 strangers, a fixed schedule and forty minutes per stop whether you like it or not. A private van gives you your own pace, your own air-con, and the freedom to linger at the good ruins and breeze past the rest.

A suggested route

  • Wat Mahathat, for the Buddha head in the tree roots.
  • Wat Chaiwatthanaram, the riverside temple that looks like Angkor's cousin.
  • Wat Phra Si Sanphet, the three iconic chedis.
  • Bang Pa-In Summer Palace on the way back, if you've got the energy.

Tips from thirty years of driving it

Go early, the ruins are brutal at midday and beautiful at 9am. Dress modestly, shoulders and knees covered, it's an active religious site. And bring water; the van's cold drinks are your friend. Ayutthaya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so treat the old bricks kindly.
